Mary Scott-Herring Faculty Profile

Mary Scott-Herring, DNP, MS, CRNA is an Assistant Professor in the Georgetown University Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice Program. She is the course director for Anesthesia and Co-existing Conditions and team-teaches in courses throughout the program in the classroom as well as in the anatomy and simulation labs.

Dr. Scott-Herring graduated from the University of Maryland DNP program in Baltimore, MD. Her focus as a DNP student encompassed preceptor policy, education, and preparation such as “A CRNA Preceptor Workshop to Increase Preceptor Satisfaction, Confidence and Comfort: A Quality Improvement Project” (Scott-Herring, M, Singh, S.).  In addition, Dr. Scott-Herring’s DNP project, “Development, Implementation, and Evaluation of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Preceptorship-Mentorship Program” (Scott-Herring, M, Singh, S.) has been widely utilized to bridge the gap to practice for CRNAs new to practice.

Dr. Scott-Herring also holds a Master’s Degree in Nurse Anesthesia from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD; a BSN from Loyola University, New Orleans, LA; a RN Diploma from St. Francis Medical Center School of Nursing, Pittsburgh, PA; and a BS in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA. Currently, she is pursing a Master’s Degree in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Baltimore, MD.

For anesthesia practice, Dr. Scott-Herring served as the Clinical Coordinator of Graduate Nurse Anesthesia Education at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD, where she administered primarily pediatric anesthesia to children ages day of life and up. Also, she managed the clinical experience of SRNAs from seven nurse anesthesia programs. Dr. Scott-Herring then had the opportunity to work as the CRNA Manager of Clinical Education and Professional Development at the University of Maryland Medical Center and the world-renowned R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, MD. In addition to providing anesthesia care, she speared headed recruiting, orientation, on-boarding, simulation experience, and a multitude of quality improvement projects. Since becoming faculty at Georgetown University, she continues to practice anesthesia in both large academic medical centers and smaller community hospitals.

One of only two CRNAs to date, Dr. Scott-Herring completed a fellowship at The Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality, Baltimore MD with a focus on simulation and pediatric airway management, “A Pediatric Airway Rotator Performance Improvement Initiative” (Scott-Herring, M., Mendez, A., Shay, J., McCloskey, J., & Koka, R.).  Since that time, she has become a certified simulation instructor through the Center for Medical Simulation at Harvard and MIT Universities.

Dr. Scott-Herring is active in both the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) and the Maryland Association of Nurse Anesthetists (MANA). Nationally, she has served on the AANA State Organization Development Committee (SODC) and the Nominating Committee. At the state level, she has served on the MANA board in a variety of positions, and for the last 10 years, as an active member of the Government Relations Committee (GRC).

Her current interests include simulation, pediatrics, patient safety, preceptor/mentor educational development, bridging the gap into CRNA practice, and medical cannabis.
