Katherine Thorpe Faculty Profile

Katie Thorpe, DNAP, CRNA is the Clinical Director for the Georgetown University Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice Program. She oversees the clinical rotation placement and progress for over 45 Georgetown DNAP students throughout the two-year clinical component of the program. Dr. Thorpe serves as a liaison between the program and over 20 established clinical sites and aims to expand to additional sites to provide diverse clinical experiences for the DNAP students. She is the course director for Advance Health Assessment and team-teaches in multiple courses in the classroom and simulation lab.

Dr. Thorpe completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from James Madison University in 2009 and worked full time as a Registered Nurse in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. After 3 years caring for children and adults with congenital heart disease, Dr. Thorpe began the MSNA/DNAP program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. As a DNAP student, she investigated the localization of the interscalene brachial plexus, comparing ultrasound sonography with anatomic landmarks. Her work was published in the Journal of Clinical Ultrasound.

Dr. Thorpe currently practices anesthesia in the outpatient surgery center and hospital settings. She has served as a preceptor to student nurse anesthetists in the clinical setting since 2015 and was awarded the 2018 Clinical Preceptor of the Year by the VCU Northern Virginia student cohort.
